ECM’s Elektronika II Profi Switchable is an automatic heat-exchange espresso machine with four pre-programmed volumetric brew buttons. A dual citizen in the world of home espresso brewing, the machine will romance your guests with its traditional Italian styling and provide you with a lasting partnership thanks to its German engineering. True to ECM’s philosophy of creating sophisticated machines with innovative technology, the Elektronika is the perfect harmony of aesthetics, convenience, and quality.
Striving to consistently impress with the outward appearance of their machines, ECM has wrapped the Elektronika in highly polished and curved stainless steel. The result is a gorgeous exterior that communicates both the elegance and durability of its design. The housing, as well as the internal components rest on a one-piece steel frame that spans the full length of the machine. The solid frame promotes greater structural integrity and prevents bending during shipping. A final feature of note is that the body of the Elektronika has been designed to absorb noise for a nearly silent brewing process.
Further contributing to silent brewing is the rotary pump. A coveted feature on home machines, rotary pumps are known not only for being much quieter than vibration pumps but also for allowing you to plumb your machine directly into a water line. Should you opt out of plumbing your machine, the Elektronika alternatively has an ample 3 liter water reservoir. To prevent the boiler from running dry, the reservoir is fitted with a reed contact for automatic shut-off in the event of low volume.
The boiler itself boasts 2.1 liter capacity and is made out stainless steel and wrapped in thermal insulation. As a heat exchange machine, the Elektronika has the ability to brew and steam simultaneously; As an automatic machine you can program the brew buttons dispense your preferred volume of espresso with just one push. An added feature is the addition of an automated cleaning cycle with its own dedicated button. Included with each machine are two of ECM’s weight balanced, chrome plated brass portafilters (1 single and 1 double spout), two filter baskets (1 single and 1 double shot), and a blind filter basket for backflushing.
For steam and hot water, the Elektronika eschews traditional knobs in favor of levers that can be locked in place for consistent flow. The steam wand uses a standard two-hole commercial style steam tip and has been insulated to help prevent burns. An additional benefit of the insulation is that milk is less likely to be burned onto the outside, making the wand much easier to clean as a result.
Finishing touches that round out the machine include the front mounted dual pressure gauges that monitor the pressure of both the boiler and the pump, the high quality redesigned feet, the high capacity drip tray, and the use copper plumbing over materials like teflon or other plastics. ECM’s Elektronika II Profi Switchable sets a very high standard as far as automatic espresso machines are concerned and once again proves their commitment to diligent manufacturing and innovative design.
Reservoir and Water Line
The ample water reservoir holds nearly 3 liters or 101 ounces of water. However, you can do away with refilling altogether by using the water line adapter. Located underneath the machine, the Elektronika II has a manual valve, allowing you to easily switch between water sources.
One of the first things you’ll notice about the portafilters are how balanced they feel in your hand. The weighted end offsets the weight of the basket, keeping you from having to overcompensate with your wrist. On par with commercial grade machines, the Elektronika II’s portafilters are made of chrome-plated brass for increased temperature stability.
Rotary Pump and Silent Operation
This is a feature that you truly need to hear to believe. Brewing is an incredibly quiet process, thanks to the rotary pump and the machine’s specially designed sound absorbing body.
Horizontally Mounted Heat Exchange Boiler
Similar to a commercial machine, the 2.1 liter boiler is mounted horizontally by a solid bracket and made of stainless steel for enhanced heat retention and corrosion resistance. The heat exchanger allows the Elektronika II to brew and steam at the same time and the boiler is heated by a 1400 watt element for a consistent brew temperature of approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pressure Stat and Brew Group Pressure Gauge
Brew pressure is monitored with a commercial grade pressure stat and can be viewed on the gauge on the front of the machine. Brew pressure can also be adjusted via a switch located on the bottom of the machine.
Insulated Steam and Hot Water Wands
To help prevent accidental burns, both the steam and hot water wands have been insulated to keep them from getting too hot too quickly. The steam wand sports a two-hole tip, ideal for frothing milk for lattes and cappuccinos. The hot water wand can dispense water for tea, cocoa, Americanos, and more.
Programmable Volumetric Brew Buttons
As an automatic machine, the Elektronika II sports four separate brew buttons that can be programmed to brew a pre-determined amount of espresso with one push. There is also a unique fifth button to activate the automated cleaning cycle.
Durable Stainless Steel Construction
ECM refers to the Elektronika as the Rolls-Royce of semi-automatic machines, and for good reason. The housing is made entirely of stainless steel, and has been smoothed and curved on the edges, resulting in a sleek and streamlined machine. ECM wasn’t content with simply welding the drip tray onto the machine, it’s actually part of the frame for enhanced durability and build quality.
